Biography
I am currently a lecturer at Glasgow University teaching on the Glasgow-UESTC joint programme. Prior to joining Glasgow in April 2020, I was as Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University, Suzhou. He has also held academic positions at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) in Kuala Lumpur, Imperial College London, London South Bank University and University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. I have over 20 years of experience in applied electromagnetism in industry and academia.
I have BEng and PhD degrees from Cardiff University and am a registered with the Engineering Council (UK) as a Chartered Engineer. I am a member of the Institute of Physics (IoP) and the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). I am curently an honorary visiting fellow in the Materials Department of Imperial College London.

Supervision
Research projects for prospective students
I would be interested to hear from any motivated student interested in persuing a PhD in the area of applied electromagnetics. Of particular interest would be students interested pursueing postgraduate research in the area highlighted below:
Excitation and emission enhancement of quantum emitters for optical biosensing and solar energy.
The aim is to investigate the enhancement of quantum emitters using 2 dimensional arrays of metal and/or dielectric nanoparticles. An example of a quantum emitter is a fluorescent molecule attached to a cancer biomarker. It would be desirable to enhance the fluorescence so that detection is possible with lower biomarker concentration and hence disease detection would be possible much earlier.
Another application of interest is the upconversion of incident light in the near infra red to a higher energy wavelength, for absorption by wide band gap solar cells. This could be done using upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP), but these have low quantum yield. The aim might be to design a suitable metasurface to enhance the excitation and emission efficiency of the UCNP.
